3              Definitions

3.1                Accuracy

3.1.1            Accuracy refers to the closeness of an observation to a true value (or a value that is accepted as being true, e.g. a Survey Control Station’s coordinates).

(Chrisman, 1991, p166),

(Davis, Foote, Anderson and Mikhail, 1981, p32),

(Burrough and McDonnell, 1998, p222),

(Foote and Huebner, 1995)

3.2                Precision

3.2.1            Precision refers to the closeness to one another of a set of repeated observations.

(Davis, Foote, Anderson and Mikhail, 1981, p32),

(Burrough and McDonnell, 1998, p222),

(Foote and Huebner, 1995).

3.3                Error

3.3.1            Error encompasses both the imprecision of data and its inaccuracies. There are many factors that contribute to error.

(Foote and Huebner, 1995).

3.4                  Figure 1 demonstrates the difference between accuracy and precision. The red and white concentric circles represent a rifle target. The black dots represent bullet holes. It has been adapted from Davis, Foote, Anderson and Mikhail, 1981, p32.
